In Puerto Morelos Mexico, exist one of the most spectacular public school locations in the world. Along the shores of the Mesoamerican Reef, is a middle school campus that was donated by a private family for educational purposes only. Over the past decade however, the school has deteriorated and has been at threat to demolition and sale for private hotel development. As the last remaining oceanside campus in all of Mexico, its loss would be tragic to the many families that consider this school a legacy to the community.

After learning about the threat to this school and its incredible location on the shores of the National Reef Park of Puerto Morelos, Pangaea's founder decided to intervene and work with the community to protect the school. He did this by creating an environmental education and reef conservation program that integrated into the local public school. From 2018 to the current day, Pangaea has worked diligently with the community, parents association, school faculty and government actors at the federal, state, and local level to prevent wrongful demolition of the campus and closure of the school.

In 2019, Pangaea was given a large section of the campus to operate the Reef Rescue School which is proving critical to the long term survival of this legacy campus and also for the rescue of the Mesoamerican Reef.

Pangaea and the Local Community Working Together

In 2020, the campus was hit by a hurricane which destroyed the water supply to the campus. To ensure the campus was able to reopen, Pangaea provided funding and repairs to the school's damaged water systems and the students were able to return to school. As long as we remain on campus and operated the Reef Rescue School, in addition to funding the ongoing repairs and maintenance of the campus, it cannot be sold or destroyed.

After many challenges and working with the community, the school campus remains protected and open for regular public school and Pangaea continues to operate the Reef Rescue School on our designated area within the campus.
